Desert Rocks Festival Slated for May 21-24 Tuesday, 04.28.2009, 10:15pm (GMT-6)
After the
truly magical blossoming of last year’s Desert Rocks Music Festival, which
featured headliners Del tha Funky Homosapien, The Derek Trucks Band, Hot
Buttered Rum, TLO, New Monsoon, and more, Desert Rocks 2009 is set to explode in
an immaculate array of sounds and swirls throughout the starry desert sky. The
festival is located at the base of the La Sal Mountains near Moab, in a
beautiful, remote redrock setting. This Mighty-Max-style desert party rolls on
with music playing until sunrise each morning.
This year is the fifth annual Desert Rocks event, and it promises to be
the ultimate mix of music, adventure and Mother Earth. The festival
runs May 21-24 at Area BFE south of Moab. Tickets are available online for $95
through May 19. The price at the venue is $115.
Ticket
purchases include four days of music and camping amongst the juniper trees. One
dollar of every purchase goes to the Rex Foundation, a nonprofit charitable
organization supporting causes related to the arts, environment and social
change. The foundation was originally established by members of the Grateful
Dead.
Beyond
providing an incredible musical lineup, the festival will also offer a mix of
healthy activities, including yoga, tai chi, and a Frisbee golf
tournament. And in preparation for this dynamite desert dance party,
organizers have enlisted the talent of the Sol Weaver’s Fire Dancers and Aerial
Ballet by Bow and Sparrow. Vendors will be onsite, selling food, crafts,
clothes and more. The Moab Brewery will offer a beer garden.
For
festival-goers desiring more adrenaline-pumping adventure, world-class mountain
biking, skydiving and whitewater rafting on the Colorado River will be offered
through Escape Adventures. The Moab-based guide service will provide bike
rentals and tours onsite.
All of
this is the icing on the cake, though. It’s the music that draws in attendees.
This year’s lineup consists of past favorites such as ALO, The Mother Hips, Hot
Buttered Rum, Wisebird, Stonefed, magicgravy, Big Light, Al Howard, Johnny
Rawls, and many, many more. New acts this year include David Gans from the
Grateful Dead Hour, hip-hop act Tha Alkaholiks, String Cheese legend Bill
Nershi playing with Head for the Hills, Nathan Moore of Surprise Me
Mr. David and The Slip, The Motet Tribute to Herbie Hancock, Lion Vibes, The
Band of Annuals, Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers, Spearit, Equal Eyes, and
Bryon Freidman.
This year,
Desert Rocks is going green by working to become Utah’s first “Zero-Waste” and
100% carbon neutral music festival. By developing a sustainable festival, organizers
hope to set a precedent in the music community. To implement this greening
program, Desert Rocks is partnering with Zerohero (http://www.zeroheroevents.com/).
