HORROR-FEST HAS A NEW TRICK UP ITS SLEEVE! Friday, 09.25.2009, 06:31am (GMT-6)
For our eighth Horror-Fest extravaganza, we
wanted to try something a little bit different. While this Halloween
celebration will still be a tribute to the very coolest in horror cinema, we
wanted to give the festivities a nice kick in the ass this year. What we've
come up with is fairly ambitious and a little crazy, but in the end, we hope
it'll be a rollicking good time for those who decide to attend. What do we have
up our sleeve this year? How about...
"HORROR-FEST: DEAD
BY DAWN"
On October 30, through the gracious aid of The
Electric Theater, we proudly present an overnight celebration of all things
horror. This year, we're showcasing Horror-Fest the best possible way: SLUMBER
PARTY STYLE! But that's not all. Through Halloween weekend, we have plenty in
store for fans of this ghoulish holiday. Here's a schedule of events (subject
to change):
OCTOBER 30-31 AT THE
ELECTRIC THEATER (68 E. Tabernacle, 688-SHOW)
6:00 P.M. – GUERILLA SHORTS AND LOCAL FILMMAKER SHOWCASE, $2
This is our ninth Guerilla Filmmaking
Competition. Competitors are given a limited amount of time to fashion short
films based on a given theme. Come and see what these talented filmmakers put
together. Get in on the action and vote for your favorite short. Prizes will be
awarded to best film. In addition to the Guerilla Shorts Showcase, we'll also
be treating attendees to premiere screenings of a few shorts that were made by
local filmmakers. These talented individuals decided that instead of talking
and dreaming about making movies, they'd just go out and shoot one. We’ll be
presenting J.C. Singh's "Lemon Meringue" (a philosophical look at the
apocalypse), Trey Paterson's "The Vampiress" (the anxiously awaited
follow-up to his well received guerilla short "The Vampire"), Shaun
Labrecque's "Ironic...Horror 5" (the latest in
the supernatural household appliance franchise), And Tysen Bang's
"Operative 2" (a character-driven piece about a professional for hire
who realizes that his life is far more complicated than he ever could have
imagined).
8:30 P.M. – A SPECIAL
SCREENING OF "TRICK 'R TREAT" (2009) (R), FREE
Simply put, "Trick 'R Treat" is a new
Halloween classic. It will do for Halloween what "A Christmas Story"
and "It's A Wonderful Life" did for Christmas. Read my glowing review
in this issue's Independent Movie Guide.
10:30 P.M. – "HORROR-FEST: DEAD BY DAWN," AN OVERNIGHT HORROR MOVIE
MARATHON, $10 (those with birthdays on Oct. 30 or 31 receive free admission, ID
required)
We invite attendees to bring their pajamas,
sleeping bags, blankets, and pillows to The Electric Theater and get a little
cozy because once nightfall hits and the lights go out, we're going to scare
the hell out of you!
In terms of programming, how will this overnight
experiment in terror unfold? Wouldn't you like to know? What we can tell you is
that Horror-Fest: Dead By Dawn is an exclusive private party, and if you're a
fan of great horror flicks and other Halloween inspired activities, you won’t
be disappointed. Look no further than the name of the event. It provides a nice
little clue pertaining to one of the films we'll be showing. It should also be
noted that, throughout the evening, we'll be offering up terrific complimentary
eats courtesy of Troy's Barbecue and Ernesto’s. The Electric Theater also has a
full service snack bar complete with a plethora of goodies including candy
bars, bottled water, soda, and fresh popcorn.

OCTOBER 31 AT TROY'S
BARBECUE (95 W. 700 S., 242-4444)
The proprietor of St. George's delectable
southern-style barbecue establishment – in conjunction with Dave's Legendary
Barbershop – proudly present a day full of ghoulish fun and surprises.
Currently, we're working on putting together a car show and an art exhibit for
the early afternoon. We may also have a few more live bands to add to the
festivities. We're still working out the details. Visit Zboneman.com for
updates. At press time, this is what we had locked in:
5:00 P.M. – SHALLOW DAY
If you're a fan of Muse, Coldplay, U2,
Radiohead, or Keane, you won't want to miss this live set from St. George's
very own Shallow Day. While Mike Seely and crew have graced The Electric
Theater on numerous occasions, this will be the up-and-coming band's first
performance at Troy's.
6:30 P.M. – MYSTERY TRAIN LIVE, FREE
Mystery Train has become a Troy's Barbecue
staple. Come see what the buzz is about as this blazing blues/rock n' roll
outfit perform a killer set of covers and originals on a ghoulish Halloween
eve.
JACK-O-LANTERN CONTEST, FREE
Pumpkin carving will not be permitted at Troy's,
but we do invite attendees to drop their previously carved pumpkin creations
off at the restaurant up to three days before the event. We'll display them and
award a prize for best Jack-O-Lantern during Mystery Train's set.
COSTUME COMPETITION, FREE
Since its Halloween, we want to encourage
attendees to come in costume. The more creative, the better. We'll offer up
prizes for best costumes during Mystery Train's set.
9:30 P.M. – A SPECIAL OUTDOOR SCREENING OF "KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER
SPACE" (PG-13), FREE
This underappreciated B-movie gem from the ‘80s
features an army of fiendish clowns from another world who prey on a town of
unsuspecting victims. A horror/sci-fi/comedy from the Chiodo Brothers –
creative sibling filmmakers and master puppeteers who would go on to work on
many noteworthy films including Team America: World Police.
The events at Troy's Barbecue are free of
charge, but we guarantee that when you get a whiff of the heavenly aroma that
awaits you once you get within 100 yards of the establishment, you will be
forced to partake of Troy Norton's amazing cuisine.
Oh, but wait! There's more!
OCTOBER 31 AT WESTATES' RED CLIFF CINEMA (1750 E. Red Cliff Dr.)
11:59 P.M. – A SCREENING
OF "THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW" (R), $5
No Halloween festival would be complete without
a screening of the cult classic "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Jason,
Sheldon, and the fine folks at Westates' Red Cliff Cinema invite all you
Halloween junkies out there to take in a showing of the unforgettable film
experience that brought new meaning to the term "audience
participation."
