Local Blues/Rock Band to Play Jazzy Java in St. George
Tuesday, 02.10.2009, 06:15pm (GMT-6)

Crippled Stripper - a new St. George band filled with familiar faces - is playing Jazzy Java Saturday, Feb. 21, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 at the door. Matt Abernathy and Runaway Bride are opening the show. What started as a jam session project between Josh Warburton and Davis (Davey) Sopko in the fall of 2008 quickly turned into a great new original band. Jerry Love, eager to jam after a few-month hiatus from playing regularly in Presence: A Tribute to Led Zeppelin, joined Josh and Davey at Josh’s house to feel out the vibe of the crazy, noisy duo. He suggested inviting Brian Huntsman, bass player extraordinaire and talented singer, to complete the outfit. This four-piece quickly gelled into a tight-sounding, blues/rock group. Both Josh and Brian are featured on lead and background vocals along with extra voice parts from Jerry. All members are passionate about the music and committed to using the best available instruments and amplification to capture a very powerful, natural sound. The music could best be described as heavy blues and original rock, but some of the jams are hard to categorize. Crippled Stripper is quickly building a following with its loud live shows. Also appearing are Runaway Bride, comprised of brothers Garet Gardner and Ross Taylor. Both write music and sing, trading on lead vocals. They have been working on new material, and the latest on the band can be found at www.myspace.com/runawaybride. The evening also features Matt Abernathy, one of southern Utah’s best-kept secrets. “He soulfully renders riveting and heartfelt songs, while his fingers appear to effortlessly play the guitar,” says Yvonne Wall of the Southern Utah Songwriters Association. Abernathy has been off the performing radar for the past couple of years, but he recently finished up some recordings, and he’s back in front of the crowd again with a fresh sound that is a real audience pleaser. Visit his site at www.myspace.com/mbabernathy. Jazzy Java is located at 285 N. Bluff St. in St. George. More information on Crippled Stripper is at www.myspace.com/crippledstrippermusic, or on Facebook, search josh warburton.
